Pressing Alt + PrintScreen keys together will capture a screenshot of the
current window and place it in the Clipboard. This will be an image of the
foreground window. It then would need to be pasted into an image program
such as Paint. Unfortunately, an image of the window does not help users on
this list very much! One exceprtion might be to save the image to a file of
an error message and email it to a support person.
Because I have needed this capability many times, especially when using
Virtual Machines, I have written a JAWS script that will take a snapshot and
then perform a dirty OCR (no prooffreading step) and display the text. The
installer will merge the OCRSnapshot script with the default scripts. This
makes it available all of the time. Version 1.0 of these scripts is
activated by the JAWSKey + PrintScreen key combination. It is available at:
http://mysite.verizon.net/marangs/OCRSnapshot.html
For the OCR to function, Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 must be installed
with the optional Microsoft Document Imaging Tools installed. Office XP
should also work for version 1.0 of my scripts. The current version is not
as efficient and opens the Microsoft Document Imaging Tool and Word each
time a snapshot is taken. It is still very handy! I have rewritten this
script to perform the OCR by directly invoking the Microsoft Office Document
Imaging (MODI) COM object. The text is directly passed back to JAWS and
displayed in the virtual window. Other developers say the code works, but
does not work properly on my computer! As soon as I figure this out, I will
release version 2. I have considered attempting to replace the Office MODI
component with a free solution. Let me know if you have any desires for
this type of capability and any ideas for improvements.
