.smil files are also files used to construct the Daisy Book format and in
the context of this list may be a more likely possibility .
In this sense .smil are not played directly but are used as a source of
information for the Daisy Player.

The daisy player is pointed to the folder with the .smil files in rather
than a particular .smil file. Or more accurately will point to a file with
the crucial navigation information. In the UK RNIB Talking Books this will
be the file NCC.html  for example.

So the short answer is that if the file is of this type there is no point in
trying to play them directly.
