how about physically destroying the drive with a hammer and a drill.
then put the parts in the drive.

Hi David,
     I truly understand about your worrying about people losing their data.
I recall several years before I ran in to these E-Mail lists, that I tried a
file shredder utility. Well, I mist one setting and promptly shredded my
desktop. That was not much fun.
     Right now what I am needing to do is wipe an old hard drive before it
goes out in the trash. Any recommendations for a program? If you would like
you could E-Mail me off list.
