Marilyn,
If it costs that much, I would seriously do as you said. You can buy netbooks starting around $300 that would work well. Even if you need a larger monitor, If the size of a screen is the problem, for her working with students, I believe using an existing large monitor such as a school may already have would work out fine.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Help needed-screwy HP laptop

Hi, all: a sighted friend has an HP laptop with Vista and has tried for two years to get it going. This after so-called expert installation (the Geeks
at Best Buy) and another pretty savvy expert. What she gets is this: she
boots and the thing takes about 20 minutes to reel off all sorts of ads and
garbage. Then, it is likely to tell her it is shutting down. Or it
connects (she has a wireless connection from what she says) to her e mail
provider sbc and outlook Express and most of the time closes down again.
She says it is not an antivirus problem but doesn't know what the program
is; it is something the store's geeks sold her. She needs her computer for teaching, using Blackboard, but more often than not has to use the school's
computers for everything. Someone told her to buy a $300. cleanup program
to fix what he says is an hp/Vista problem.
Do any of you have any idea about this or have any advice? MY advice is to
throw the sucker out the window or give it away and start over with a pc.
Thanks for any help because this has driven me nuts, too. Sick of hearing
about it. Marilyn
