[Blind-Computing] copping programs to a external drive

Hello, I am new at this so forgive me if it comes off as a stupid question! 
I am trying to put all my programs that are on cd on my extneral drive.  Do 
I need to use nero to do this or can I simplely copy all the folders that 
are on the cd to the drive renameing it with the program title?  Someone 
said something about virtualizing the program first.  thank you Heather
