Can you provide more info about when and how it shuts down? I am using a Dell laptop that for months would suddenly shutdown without any notice whenever it was processing a large intensive task, such as creating a backup image, ripping a DVD, or performing a full anti-virus scan. Basically anything that took over an hour. It turns out that these task causes the CPU to overheat and at some point, does an emergency shutdown.

I found a utility called Hardware Sensor Monitor for about $33 thatmonitors many hardware sensors. It constantly updates it's status in the System Tray and displays the CPU temperature by default with a color coded background. The Pro version that I purchased also can be set to switch the CPU on and off quickly, effectivly slowing down or throttling the CPU, if overheating, thus preventing damage from heat or completely shutting down.

Since I was curious about when and how fast it was overheating, I quickly wrote some JAWS Scripts to announce the CPU temperature and background color by pressing a hotkey. I then added a function to set a temperature threshold and interval and make it announce the temperature at the interval whenever over the threshold. I no longer have a problem with the computer shutting down, can manage the CPU overheating, and have not yet noticed any task being slower than before.

Has it done it more than once, and is it a laptop, or a desktop PC?

Just wondering since if a laptop, it could also be a possible hardware issue related to battery etc., but alternatively, my windows XP machine, when it gets unstable sometimes restarts itsself...not a good sign...LOL!

Stay well

Subject: [Blind-Computing] a friend's computer is going into shutdown mode

Hi, everyone,

Last night I was helping a friend add addresses in to his MS outlook address book. He and his wife are friends who live in Maine. Anyway, we were doing the address and suddenly his computer went into shutdown mode. I asked my nephew today if it was possible if there could be a virus and he said yes. Are there other things that could make a computer go into shutdown mode?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rosemarie
