Betsy:

Tell u what. this is a bit complicated, so hold on for 8 w/me & let's ride!

1) Go to control panel, system, control tab to advanced, & then tab to
& activate the 'environmental variables' button;
2) tab past the 'user environmental variables section to system
environmental variables group, & activate the 'new' button;
3) In the name field, type (or cut & paste) devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
4) In the value field, type 1
5) Press the 'ok' button till the dialog is dismissed--it's like 3 times.

Now what we wanna do is to go to the device manager--control panel >
system, control tab to hardware, activate the device manager button.

At this point, go into the view menu (alt v), & select 'show hidden
devices', or just press w.

You're now faced w/an array of stuff you've likely never seen b4.
Don't go deleting indiscriminately here, but do look for any instances
of your driver that appear not to be working & delete them. U can
press enter on each instance to determine whether or not the device is
working.

If deleting the crap devices doesn't work, then uninstall the driver
in the device mangler & reboot your machine w/the apex plugged in.

Let me know whether or not this helps.
