Did you try rebooting your computer, some times that does the trick..

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Sounds in Sound Schemes not working
Hi All;
For whatever reason the sounds in my Sounds Schemes have stopped working.
Even if I press the spacebar on the play & stop toggle button, I get no
sounds on any of the sound events. This happens for all the sound events.
How do I get the sounds back? I am running XP Home, SP3, & Jaws10 latest.
All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.
