I just am happy to know what they are?

There was a very informative article on this subject a couple of years ago
in smart computing magazine. In short version 3 is around 10 times faster
than version 2 although it will be far more expensive for a while
unfortunately. The main purpose will be for external disk drives and
other
such storage devices. Things like keyboards and mice can't even make use
of
USB 2 speeds. In fact neither will sound cards and external CD/DVD burners
make use of version 3 speed as there is a limit as to how fast a disk can
be
burned before errors start to creep in to the process.
USB 3 is only starting to come out here lately but don't expect all of the
ports on any system to be version 3 compatible as it will be far too
impractical and like I said costly as well. Now having said that I'd like
to
see just how fast such an animal would be sitting in front of me, I'll bet
they smoke.

From the Wikipedia page relating to USB (universal serial bus):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb
under the history heading:
"The original USB 1.0 specification, which was introduced in January
1996, had a data transfer rate of 1.5 Mbit/s.[5] The first widely used
version of USB was 1.1, which was released in September 1998. It
allowed for a 12 Mbit/s data rate for higher-speed devices such as
disk drives, and a lower
1.5 Mbit/s rate for low bandwidth devices such as joysticks.[6]
The USB 2.0 specification was released in April 2000 and was
standardized by the USB-IF at the end of 2001. Hewlett-Packard, Intel,
Lucent Technologies (now Alcatel-Lucent), NEC and Philips jointly led
the initiative to develop a higher data transfer rate, with the
resulting specification achieving 480 Mbit/s, a fortyfold increase
over the original USB 1.1 specification.
The USB 3.0 specification was published on 12 November 2008. Its main
goals were to increase the data transfer rate (up to 5Gbps), to
decrease power consumption, to increase power output, and to be
backwards-compatible with USB 2.0.[7] USB 3.0 includes a new, higher
speed bus called SuperSpeed in parallel with the USB 2.0 bus.[8] For
this reason, the new version is also called SuperSpeed.[9] The first
USB 3.0 equipped devices were presented in January 2010.[9]"

I believe it has something to do with the speed of transmition of data.
2.0
would be slower than say 3.0.

Sorry to be useless here, but people keep throwing these things at me
at work, and I haven't a clue what they are talking about.
Because we are security conscious we have to back up certain files
to off-line hard drives.
Now people are talking about USB 2 and 3, what does this mean?
