I would say the skill level on this task would be possibly intermediate as a 
guess. The cool thing about gold wave is that you can record each side of 
the tape once then split the tracks in to separate channels and tracks 2 and 
4 since by default record in reverse the software will allow you to correct 
that without recording them over again.

thanks to all the guys who offered their expertise. Now, I'm even more
nervous about my potential for doing this. I don't even know how to get to
my sound card which, apparently, is the first step in this process.

then, can i just use my 4 track recorder/player to transfer one track at a

this all sounds very daunting. Maybe I'll just give the tape and a tape
