"Search for messages"? Are you talking about checking for email messages on your isp's remove mail server? Without knowing anything more, it is a bit hard to give an answer. It would help if you told us what program you are using and what type of messages you want to be searched for.

In general, a program's options is usually the place where such things are set. NOte that "options" is only one possible name for the location of the place to set these. Popular alternative names are Ppreferences" or "settings". Most often you can find the options of a program under the "tools" or "view" menu but it can be located elswewhere also. Just explore your program's menus and help system and you should find what you are looking for.
