Hi,
I used to use AVG but it kept interfering with my speech so I got rid of it.
Now I use MSE and it works great. It just quietly runs in the background.

Bad sectors are a physical problem with the drive, so a reformat will not
fix them. However, you should certainly be able to use some utility to
scan your drive for bad sectors. Scandisk used to do this, but chkdsk
doesn't really seem as thurough.
As for AVG, I know it hung when I tried to uninstall it normally and left
the procedure about half done. I used revo uninstaller to get rid of the
remaining crap. The programme (AVG) seemed kind of broken at the time
anyway, so if yours is working well right now it will probably uninstall
correctly. I started using Avira instead and it generally works more
smoothly, though I'm still up for trying a few different AV packages.

Hi Rick,
I didn't. I just did some comparisons of free/used space.
I was just making an assumption, but I believe Don is right about there
being bad sectors on my dad's desktop.
There is probably a way (method or software) of determining how much
space a particular program takes up.
BTW: would a reformat fix those bad sectors, or is that too much for this
issue? :)
I did a check disk and scan disk on both computers last month.
I think I'll just stick with the replacement hard drive suggestion
though. :)
Thanks!
Alvin

Hi Alvin,
How did you determine the amount of space on the hard drive Microsoft
Security Essentials occupies?

Hi list
It's Alvin.
My AVG license is about to expire next month, and I want to make sure
that I uninstall everything associated with it. What's the best way to do
this?
I am thinking about using Microsoft Security Essentials instead.
I already use it on my dad's desktop, and I want to put it on my HP
laptop.
However, I have noticed on my dad's desktop that it seems to take up
quite a bit of the hard drive. At one point, the computer had around 22
gigs free, but after a while, it has about 2 gigs of hard drive.
Is this normal? This would be my only hang up with using MSE. It seems to
be a hard drive hog. :)
Is there something I can do to minimize this from happening? I haven't
installed anything on the desktop that takes up that much space. At least
I don't believe so.
Maybe Windows update is doing it without me knowing. It often installs
things (according to my dad) when I shut down the computer.
The desktop is using Windows XP Pro SP2 with about 1 Gig of ram and
around 40 Gigs on the hard drive. It's an old computer. Lol
My HP Pavilion notebook has about 2 Gigs of Ram and around 80 Gigs on the
hard drive and is using Windows XP Home SP3.
It is pretty old too. Lol I have had it since the spring of 2005.
It shows signs of wear and tare from time to time, but it still gets done
what I need it to do.
I am looking into purchasing another computer anyway.
Well any info/guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Be blessed!
Alvin
