Interesting approach, unfortunately that wouldn't be practical here because of the physical layout of our house. This is just something I am trying to take to the next level although I don't need to do it at this point. I figure my network is as secure as anybody else's out there.

Most people don't know what they're doing and a lot of them are really good at it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jacob Kruger" <[email protected]>

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] networking windows 7 with XP

Although doesn't really count, I have relatively recently connected someone's windowsXP PC to my windows7 64 bit machine using a crossover/twisted pair network cable, and on both machines we specifically just made sure they were both using TCPIP, with the same subnet mask, and assigned them relatively similar virtual IP addresses (not too sure that's the right terminology, but it means made one of them 192.168.1.100 and the other 192.168.1.101 since those are IP addresses that don't really get used in real world), and then on both machines, selected a specific folder and on something like tools menu in windows explorer told them to render as shared, and made some changes to sharing permissions, and then we could copy files backwards and forwards using something like run \\machineName\folderName on both of them, but this was a rather temporary, quickfix idea and don't honestly remember too many details, but, think it was making use of TCPIP4 or thereabouts, and it did work, but anyway.

Stay well

I've got the deal where by I can network either read only or read / write directories on windows 7 with XP. It crossed my mind yesterday to try and figure out if it is possible to only share selected directories with certain systems. For example only share a specific directory with my lap top and the same with my XP tower. This would be in effect a further step toward locking down the network. Granted my router has a 20 digit password so anybody who gets in there is pretty sharp so far as that goes. I just wondered is all if that were something possible.

This is probably why they offer entire courses in networking and the fact is I am flying in the face of the unknown.

If anybody out there has further information regarding this subject please share it so to speak. I might just post the documentation I already have on the server for others to benefit from.

I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I'll probably screw that one up too.
