The system can be set to force all programs to unload before the system
shuts down. The fact is I do it all of the time. FYI here is the command
syntax.

reboot
shutdown -r -f -t 00

shutdown
shutdown -s -f -t 00

The switch -f is what forces all programs to close out. The -t switch is for
setting a delayed timer, so where the 00 is displayed if say you wish to
have the system shutdown in 2 minutes the 00 would be changed to 120.

This can all be done using the scheduled task wizard.

Although I don't know much about this I would also think it
would be important not to have open programs with unsaved
data or can this be covered with commands as well? Just
curious

It is no different than setting anything else to run at a
certain time. You
do need to know the command along with the switches to go
with it.

To All Listers:

Does anyone know if it is possible for a computer to be
programmed to shut
down at a specified time? As with all elementary school
kids, my son
sometimes has an issue of turning his computer off at a
decent time during
the school week.

Thanks in advance.
