My advice is to not use Turbo C compiler.
Use GCC (GNU C Compiler / GNU Compiler Collection) instead.
I used GCC my self when I programmed in C.
GCC is command-line and thus very accessible.
I wrote the code in EdSharp (a good and accessible text editor for Windows) and
compiled my programs on the command line with GCC.

Another alternative is Open Watcom C compiler and I also believe that Microsoft
 got a free C/C++ compiler.
