Hi Mark,

Regarding the plug you detached from the hard drive while drive was still
inside enclosure...

Was it a plug that felt like a half inch wide USB plug with a flat cable
about 1/4 of an inch wide? If so that's a sata cable which means you have a
sata i or sata II hard drive in there.

If it was a wide 25? pin connector attached to the hard drive, then it is
likely you have an older IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive in there.

There are USB to ATA/Sata/SATA II adaptors for sale at Amazon and such.
These adaptors are meant to be used as a type of bridge from the external
hard drive, connected via this cable, and attached to your computer via USB
slot on your desktop. They work really nicely, but this is probably not a
good solution if your goal is to use the hard drive for backup and storage.
I use this type of setup when plugging in hard drives to determine if they
are still alive or not. If they are, I use them as a type of safe for my
files. I copy my files to the drives then encrypt the drives. I detach then
store for next use.

Hi John, and Jacob,
Well, I just completed dissecting the hard drive before reading Johns
E-Mail. John, you are right in that the Minnie USB plug was surface soldered
to the small bred board in the hard drive case. It would take someone with
good eye sight, a steady soldering hand, and a lot of time to fix it.
However, I was very grateful for Jacobs idea of putting it in a new case.
This give me hope. I was able to unplug the controller FROM THE HARD DRIVE
AND FIND IT LOOKS LIKE SOME TYPE OF STANDARD hard drive data plug. However,
I do not know what type of data plug it is. I will need to sort that out in
order to find a compatible drive box. I also need to get it measured to see
what with box to be looking for. If anyone has ideas on these topics or a
good place to buy the box I would appreciate them.
     Thank you.

God bless,
Mark

Jacob,
As I read Mark's problem, I believe that the tension clips have snapped.
These are small plates which fit tightly against the smaller type of USB
jack and keep it from moving.
If one of them snaps, that particular connector is useless.

Worst comes to the worst, you can generally transfer/move the actual drive
over/into another new, healthy housing, or possibly, simply replace the
cable for that housing as such - for example, my two separate external USB
cabled hard drives are in two rather different housings, since the one is a
larger, physical dimension drive, but, smaller in terms of capacity, and
they're both actually the same internal hardware as you would normally find
with a normally mounted, internal hard drive, but just mounted in these
externally housings that then let you connect them via USB cables, and
provide power sources for them, etc. etc.

Either way, first thing to do would be to see if just cable can be replaced,
and lots of these external drive housings use various standard connector
cables of shared varieties as well.

Stay well
