Ultimately it is a personal choice by who ever is performing the backup. So far as fumbling around as you mentioned I have never done such a thing. I know how to use the program, oh and BTW I did read the manual quite some time ago.

We're talking about making an image to protect your important information, why not learn as much as possible about this process rather than fumbling around hoping you've backed up your information properly.
