Hi Mike,
If Jaws is running from the system tray, then the insert + J keystroke will
bring up a context menu of options.
If Jaws is not running from the system tray, then the keystroke insert + J
will place the focus on the Jaws application window.

Yes, the 0 key doubles as the insert key with the num-lock off. The insert
+ J keystroke only works if you are running Jaws from the system tray. Are
you running Jaws from the system tray? If you Alt + tab & come across a
Jaws window, Jaws is not running in the system tray.

is the "insert" key the 0 (long) key on the numpad? i try and press
it + J to adjust my jaws voice speed, but nothing happens when i hit
this key + J. i use windows xp
