This is true to an extent but the original question here was about
hand written material which to my knowledge cannot be recognized. The
Apple apps that OCR text require a lot of practice and patience as
they were not specifically designed for the blind, but rather the
sighted community. Having used the KNFB Mobile reader on a Nokia
platform I have to say there is no equivalent on the Apple platform as
of yet. I do believe at some point there will be. I'm not discouraging
folks from trying these apps but several folks on other lists are
looking for a suitable replacement for the KNFB reader say there is no
comparison.

It is true, it is called Zoom Reader. Note that there are several
other apps as well, text detective and a few others. You can get them
downloaded using iTunes.

Correct me if I am wrong, I have heard the apple i-phone has an app,
that is real time OCR. This is what I understand of it, but did not
get the time or space to research on the same, you launch the app,
using the camera on the phone one or two inches above the printed
matter and slowly hover over the printed material and the phone voices
the matter to you in real time.

Sounds really unbelievable, but if it is true, I am going to invest
heavy on that phone. I am sure it's not gonna help with hand written
matter, printed matter I guess it can take into stride.

Hi Stephanie,
Actually, I believe you have to manually enter the dollar amount from
the keypad.
Doubt that we will have access to hand writing at the computer anytime
soon, since OCR technology isn't perfect for type written characters.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Reading handwriting

Hello all,
When my husband goes to the ATM machine, he deposits hand-written
checks and

the machine proceeds to spit out a receipt with the correct dollar
amount printed on it. This tells me that there must be a way for blind
professionals to read a form or check with hand-written material,
somehow.
There are various assistive devices and technology that can read
printed material, such as the ATM receipt. So, has anyone heard of a
way for blind people to read a hand-written check at home or in the
office?
Thanks for your help,
Stephanie
