I found it easier to beat that boss than the ghost. You have understood
the trick, then the only thing you should do now is don't make any
error. If you can't attack, use herbs, or cast spells on yourself such
as stats boosters (they always work).
Personnally I did two misstakes, and finally still beat it only with 2
manamons remaining.

The ghost phases between states every 2 moves or so.
When he phases between types, you can hit him.
The trick is then to only use and only use 2 types.
So if you attack with flame and stone, always attack with flame and
stone.
If he switches to a type other than what you have you can't attack.
Keep a lot of herbs with you and you should be able to beat him.

I'd happily pay 20, and could probably even be persuaded to pay 25 or
(if you catch me on a good day) 30, but $40 is a bit much for my
tastes. So, I've never gotten past the end of the demo on the
first one.
