Hi.
A mud is a text based game superficially similar to interactive fiction,
in that you progress by typing commands such as north south etc to move,
or attack goblin, get key from box or inventory to interact with objects
and npcs.
However, there are two major differences with muds.
The first is that they're online, the second is that they are real time.
So, you will encounter characters controlled by other human player
connected to the mud who your character can interact with.
Obviously the type of interaction depends upon the mud, EG chatting,
roleplaying your character like a real person saying what she/he does,
trading goods, fighting etc.
By real time, what I mean is that events in the mud happen whether your
typing or not.
so, if a monster attacks you, the attacks will go on happening (though
in most games your character will do standard attacks back automatically).
If you speak to another character, or another character speaks to you,
messages will appear instantly like a chat program, ditto with their
actions, or with other in game events.
Obviously, with events happening in real time, you need incoming text
spoken straight away by your screen reader, that is where a mud client
like Vipmud can help.
vipmud also has lots of other helpful features, in particular, the
ability to have text sent from the mud and output commands you type in
in two separate windows you can tab between, making it easy to say find
something you want. it also saves your connection info to mud games, and
lets you setup character profiles to play several.
Vipmud has lots more advanced features, going right up to developing
your own scripts and programs to play muds, or indeed running other
people's, however how much you get into that is up to you, for myself I
just use it to play games and have fun.
For what muds to try, if you go to www. audiogames.net and search games
under the "muds" category, you'll find a listing of several that are
more friendly to screen readers, since whilst all muds (being text), are
playable, how say fast you need to react to the incoming text, or how
the mud processes information can vary.
As If your starting out, I'd recommend perhaps checking out Erion if
your interested in an easy to pickup fantasy hacknslash rpg, Cosmic rage
if you want a futuristic space game with lots of activities and a great
community (plus a very detailed soundpack that provides a massive amount
of background music and sounds for different game events, or Clok if you
want something a little more complex and orientated towards roleplaying
and crafting.
Alteraeon is in a special category of it's own, since whilst it's one of
the best, most rich, detailed and complex fantasy muds imaginable, is
very easy to get into, and highly welcome to new players and thus is
always worth a play, it has it's own customised client to play which
pretty much turns it into a full scale audio rpg (someone once described
it as audio world of warcraft which it virtually is. The client also
comes with lots of handy shortcuts and features, so if your interested
in Alteraeon specifically, in that one case I'd recommend not using
Vipmud, and connecting with the custom scripted MushZ client instead.
Hth.
All the best,
Dark.
