The biggest problem with NetHack, on Windows at least, is that most Windows screen readers no longer keep track of the cursor position in a way which makes it easy to review the map. It's maddening but I don't really have a solution.
For instance, if you had something like this: ---- |$.| |.>| ---- If your cursor was on the >, and you moved up one row, Windows screen readers will bring you all the way back to the vertical bar on the left side. Jaws has some support for tracking the cursor properly in the old Windows command prompt, but not the newer Windows terminal, which is frustrating. NVDA doesn't anywhere, as far as I know. Sorry to go on a bit of a rant, this is one of the things which drives me nuts.
