Yes, you can, but that still doesn't solve the problem of the screen reader not tracking your position on the map correctly. As it happens, NetHack defaults to putting your PC cursor on the symbol that represents your character, which is the @ but may also be something else if you end up, say, transformed into a dragon or whatever. The need to keep track of the column you are reviewing to get a sense of the map layout makes these games far easier to play on Linux with Speakup, for what that's worth.
