For those that have played nethack for a little while, nymphs tend to be light-fingered with items and leprachauns are light-fingered with your zorkmids. For that reason closets can be useful places to stash your stuff while on a level since if you don't have it it can't be stolen. Closets can also be useful if you have lots of heavy items since lightening your load can make you more effective in the battles. Once a level is cleared, then retrieve your stuff from the closet and take it down to the next level. Even better if you know the location of the closet on that next level since that way you can repeat the process. Closets can be elevators but only under very specific circumstances low level players aren't likely to encounter. Oh, remember after dumping your stuff in a closet to close the door behind you andnote those screen coordinates since you can use those coordinates to guide you back to your stuff.
