I can't give you the last few, but here are some of them and hopefully
somebody else on here knows more than I do and can cover the rest. I
also hope that game's not timed, because this definitely requires a
calculator.
You get the average of a list of numbers by adding them together, and
dividing that number by the number of items in the list. So if I had a
list of four numbers:
12, 37, 21, and 6
I add them together to get 76
and divide that by 4, the number of items in the list, to get an average
of 19.
The median of a list of numbers is the one in the middle if you sort the
list. It works much better on lists that have an odd number of items, so
let's add the number 14 to my earlier example, giving us:
12, 37, 21, 6, and 14
Now sort that list:
6, 12, 14, 21, and 37
To get the median, take off a number from the left and right at the same
time, until you have only one number left. Our first removal looks like:
12, 14, 21
We have more than one number so do it again:
14
Now there's only one item left in the list, so the median is 14.
I believe the median of an even number of items is the average of the
last two,so if we go back to the list of four items:
12, 37, 21, and 6
and sort that:
6, 12, 21, and 37
Now remove the first and last leaving us with:
12 and 21
and take the average of those, so:
12+21 is 33
33 divided by 2, the number of items we added, is 16.5
Yes, median can be very ugly.
Mode is pretty easy. It's the number that shows up the most often. Take
the list:
3, 6, 6, 9, and 12
The mode is 6, because 6 shows up twice, and all the other numbers only
show up once.
If there are multiple numbers that show up the same number of times you
can either say that there are multiple modes, or no mode at all.
For example, there are no repeating numbers in my original list of 12,
37, 21, and 6, so either all of them are the mode or none of them are.
Range is the difference between the smallest and largest number in the
list. Take your list, sort it, and subtract the smallest number from the
biggest. Using our example list:
12, 37, 21, and 6
sort it to:
6, 12, 21, and 37
The smallest number is 6 and the biggest is 37, so subtract 6 from 37:
37-6 is 31
The range is 31.
Excel should be able to do all of this for you, though you may need to
look up the specific function to use: put all the items in a row or
column and run the formula you want, for example Average(a1:e1).
Good luck!

Hi all
I need help with a mini game in the intelectual world in crazy party called
statistical calculation.
I haven't learned to calculate statistics in school, so I even don't have
an idea what most of the different types mean.
I get the first 3 right:
Group size refers to the number of bots who played the game.
Lets say there is 4 bots so I choose 4 in the group size column.
Minimum and Maximum means the bot with the lowest and the bot with the
highest score.
But I don't know what the others mean.
average
range :
mode :
median
variance :
standard deviation :
coefficient of variation
Is it possible to calculate these statistics in excel?
Or else if you can give me a method to calculate it mentally that would
also work.
Many thanks for any help
