You don't really have to bring up the task manager but it lasts for so long that it makes one think something froze, that's right, I know. :-) It just keeps on searching for games for about a minute or so, until it stops and lets you do anything else. :-) So you can either stop it using brute force like you described or wait till it stops by itself. :-) Hope this helps.
