James (if you are there; and anyone else that is interested),
I hope that if anything comes from this awful period in our community's
history, it is the realisation that how we behave does affect others and
can eventually end up coming back and affecting us too.
I have sat on the sidelines in many of these flamewars and stopped
posting here for a long time due to the lack of interest from a lot of
people here in genuinely improving the community.
Fortunately for myself, I am now more actively (though nothing like as
actively as I'd prefer) involved with two smaller groups within this
community, both of which contain mature people who offer constructive
criticism.
James: I don't know you and it seems I most likely won't now, but I am
definitely sorry to see things come to a head like this, after what
you've been subjected to in your business and private life over the past
few years. I can only hope things pick up for you now you've made this
decision and can spend more time with your loved (and loving) ones.
It was your departure from ESP that tipped the balance and made us start
work on the AGRIP project. Though we are only about 1/3 of the way
towards our main goals, I am looking forward to continuing to reach them
and I hope that us and the other developers will go some way towards
furthering the medium of accessible gaming without you. Your
contributions, however, will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by
more people than would like to admit that, I'm sure.
We have been through some demanding times recently and AGRIP development
has suffered during them as a result, but at least when we have been
unable to work so much on the games, we don't get flamed viciously by
those in the community that we care about. Once again, if his episode
has taught us anything, I hope it is that we should really try to put
things more into perspective and show a little more understanding.
I realise that it is not right to expect some of our present and future
membership (due to age) to be able to fully appreciate issues like this
and, as such, I think the more mature members should try to stick up for
the devs a little (as some have done) and explain such issues without
rising to flame bait or writing flames themselves.
Anyway, the main issue here is that we should remember what James has
done for us, thank him for it and wish him the best of luck for the
future. I certainly do and I know many others will (and have).
James: Whatever happens in the future for you, I hope that it is
something you can enjoy with the people that matter.
Best of luck,
--
