I've been playing with a steering wheel for a long time and have not
noticed this. I've had some server crashes but that has been whether I'm
using a steering wheel or just the keyboard.

It has been suggested that if your difficulty in the game is set to easy
then perhaps that can contribute to the crashes so if you are planning
on hosting a game to only use the normal difficulty.
