Hi Richard,
One of the major reasons your class is being done in C++ is that is the 
universal game programming standard. Weather you are talking Microsoft 
Game Studios, Activision, Nintendo, Sega, etc they use C++ in there game 
engines. In the blind comunity many are amature programmers that just do 
it in a language they know like Visual Basic for example. It  would be  
doubtful you will hear about any other language other than C++ in a game 
programming class although there are books out there for C# .NET and 
Visual Basic languages on game programming.
When starting out my first choice was to go for a C++ type engine. 
However, I was learning the .NET sweit of languages at the time, and 
discovered I liked them so just ended up writing my engines in C# .NET 
instead.
