Now that I know there is a gas line over head then I suggest you use dynamite. 
You can smooth out the ruff parts after the blast.

Please, you are shattering my all too brittle ego. *GRIN* I will make 
one pathetic attempt to salvage my dignity though. I could probably swing 
a heavier sledge if I were driving something down into the ground, like a 
fence post. However, swinging the sledge at head height against a wall, 
while trying not to hit the gas line over head, or my hand, and trying to 
hold a chisel in place and keep it from slipping off and plunging it into 
my chest with each hammer blow, has been a challenge. *GRIN*
