Maybe pput a piece of electrical tape around the wire before sticking it out the window to prevent the wire from breaking.

The resistance of the wire is a significant part of the total resistance of wire and sensor. Once you change the length of the wire and add the resistance of a splice, likely not soldered, the whole thing is out of calibration.
