I have the same provlem with mine, even though I made the splice with extreme 
care.

Probably the reason is that the thermistor diode depends on resistance to 
determine temperature. It passes varying amounts of current depending on 
it's temperature. Your splice or possibly the length of the wire will 
present a slightly different resistance to the meter when it reads and so it 
assumes a different temperature and reports that.

A sort of electronic version of parallax.

I don't know for sure if that is the reason but it sounds convincing to me 
at least.
