I have several home made guides that snap to a magnetic bar I fabbed up out of a couple of magnetic wrench holders. I position the magnetic bars near where I want to drill. I then attach the appropriate sized drill guide to the magnetic bar, center it over my center punch mark and go to work. One advantage to this system is that if I need to drill several wholes a specific distance apart for either rivets or future panel welding. I can set up several drill guides of the same diameter and get pretty good repetability. I just spent about sixty hours smoothing and reshaping the fire wall in my El Camino and I am now faced with relocating a whole bunch of accessories and wondered if you guys had a better method for drilling wholes. How does your dowel guide mount to the drilling surface?
