Richard, It would be helpful if you can tell us what type of water heater you have. (eg. electric, gas with a pilot light, gas with electric power vent, etc.) The answer will depend on the type of water heater, since the reset button is different for each type. I will assume that it is not a gas heater with a standing pilot light, since you didn't say that you had to relight it to get to operate again.
