lol as I said that document of mine is part 1.

the thing about using a chainsaw for carving in comparison to chisels and a
mallet is basically that you are using a system with a chain running at
anywhere from 7000 to 16000 rpm and its able to rough, gouge, split, slice,
plane
or carve through any timber. so getting control of a chinsaw is a discipline
in itself. so if you're gonna get used to a chainsaw then no worry.

continuing with that project.................
r'r'r'r'r'r'r'r'r'r''rvr'vr'vr'vr'vr'vr'vr'vr'vr'vr'vroo'oo'oo'oom'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm'm!

now that the back wedge has been removed you'll feel an l shaped cut away at
the back. now with your either mid sized or large saw quarter cut either
side down so that you can remove the two sides and then work on the front. and
top line.. the more you start cutting and thinning the more you get a
reasonable shape. now then the next bit is a little bit more precise. go to the

back of the log in its vertical position where that large bit has been cut and
with a short bar saw run it at full throttle and run the bar like you are going
to take a cut but you're not. bring the machine in contact and move the saw
right to left slowly. speed is not the issue its the cutting of the chain.

at this point now go and sharpen the chain with a file gauge and then start
work again. come to the tail line and with the saw run at an angle and
slowly trim back the side of the tail slightly and round it with a swinging
action. this is a special trick and shouldn't be taken too lightly

lol

now under the backside of the eagle from where the top and back has been
trimmed, bring the bar in contact and sculpt the back inside up slightly. so
that's the back done for the main carve.

now the front. take the chainsaw. mid bar and start cutting off the edges
downward so that you can round off. now when you get toward the footing
start roughing out on a round downward. so you get a half round feel. now then
the next trick uis bringing the blade toward the head point and scating
slightly with the bar resting at the top and cutting at a 70 degree angle.
the head
is the most intricate bit and needs a small bar chainsaw like my ms170 at
top throttle.

bring the bar about 6 inches down from the top of the head and at straight
angle and run at full throttle. guide the bar in slowly and then rough out
sideways. it such a joy to do it. then there's the trick of sculpting down on
an
arc.

arc cutting with the bar is a process of using the bar at a set angle and
then slowly rotating the handle and side so you follow a rounding cut. let the
saw do the work and not you. so be gentle now. when that bit is taken, now use
the saw to round the edges with the side fin of the bar at 3/4 throttle.
and there is the chest of the eagle. as a roughed out point. the front of the
neck is sculpted and the head is in its starting stages. the back is then a
case of scating the bar and making the profiles for the wings..

last stage is doing the intricate parts with the mini chainsaw my ms170. a
simple job and less weighty so just get stuck in.

there you have it. the eagle is finished
