Rob, I had to install some here last spring my wife made me! I think mine are Kidde, I bought the type which are wired in as well as battery back-up. I have a fourth to install but haven't got to that yet, the three I have are one in the basement near the furnace and water heater, another just far enough away from the kitchen to miss the toaster and a third up stairs outside of our bedroom. I want another in the other upstairs hall, the cable is in place but I haven't got to cutting into the old plaster & lath ceiling, a dirty business.
These only say "fire" or "carbon dioxide or "hush mode" in both English and French. I have managed to set them all off screaming with my router a couple of times and once with my drum sander. I also see that they are promoting a talking alarm which you record a message onto apparently intended to instruct children in case of alarm. I purchased mine from Canadian Tire but that is probably not appropriate for you, here are a couple of URLs I have found and pasted from a google search.
