Like Tom said, and like has been said here before, a tube method seems to 
be a pretty usable system.  This way you are measuring the distance from 
the top of the fill to the top of the oil.  Where a dip-stick measures 
from the bottom of the tank to the top of the oil.

You will still need separate tubes for each type of engine, or one tube 
that is marked in several locations.
