Thanks Dale, yes it was very instructional. Considering the one I now have is a lot shorter, this is probably worth buying. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dale Leavens Sent: Wednesday, November 22, 2006 5:52 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] The Rip Fence Blues It is not a dumb question! Questions are never dumb though sometimes answers can be.
This Acu-Rip saw guide is intended for use on a saw with the blade on the right. They tell you this in the documentation. Now as I look at it there is no good reason why you could not instal it on a saw with the blade on the left however the fence would still be out to the left of the saw so you would lose the width of your saw from the overall width of rip which would be about 7 inches and the ruler would be unusable but for the blind this isn't significant. To describe the guide, it is a length of aluminium strap about an inch and a quarter wide and maybe 26 inches long. This gets oriented at right angles to the direction of the saw, sticking out to the left but extending a little beyond the right edge of the front of the shoe plate of the saw. There is a piece of aluminium a little longer than the width of my shoe plate which widens the original strap and a pair of screw down clamps which slide over the front edge of the shoe plate and secure it to the shoe plate. There is a notch on the front edge of the strap which you align to the indicator notch of the shoe plate and the blade of the saw and a ruler which extends from the edge of this sight slot to the left and nearly to the end of the strap. There is a guide with another screw down clamp which slides along the strap and along the ruler on that strap from the far left end where it measures 24 inches from the left side of the blade if the strap is registered accurately along to about 0 where it aligns with the notch. The guide fence is probably 4 inches long so it is pretty decent . You could not mount the guide sticking out to the right as it is presently configured and if you use a right side blade there is no way you could align the notch with the sight notch of the shoe because there wouldn't be enough room to clamp the device securely to the saw plate. This would grievously disturb the optically dependent but those of us who don't depend on the ruler could use the guide by measuring from the edge of the blade to the inside of the guide directly, something we would probably do anyway. The distance limit which would be the 24 inches minus the width of the particular saw, usually 7 or 8 inches. This could still be a useful tool but within those limitations. Hope this was a useful description and helps understanding..
