what about coald heat irons? ----- Original Message ----- From: Tom Fowle To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2006 9:28 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] soaldering
Carl, Read the soldering series and learn to do landmarking so you can get the iron where you want it. A little melted insulation usually won't hurt much if all you're doing is soldering wires together and to tracks etc. tape works wonders. I strongly support the idea of a smallish pencil iron they're cheap and do the job, but anything takes some practice and a few minor burnt fingers along the way. Resistance soldering gear is very expensive and isn't as easy as you'd think. We've had varriable success with it, and especially where you're probably having lots of different sized stuff to work on, I don't think a resistance soldering system would make you happy in the end. Guns are simpler to start with but your hand will move as you squeeze the trigger and the tip will jump from where you so carefully put it, then you gotta start all over again. so learn to handle a hot pencil iron and do landmarking and do it the best way from the start. After a while you'll get where it's as easy to use as a screw driver. I didn't believe it either when I started working with Bill Gerrey here over 24 years ago, but it works.
