Hi Lenny, Before you take it back consider a couple of things.
Like Alex said, a standard vacuum cleaner doesn't necessarily work all that well with a sander because of the small particles, they usually block up the filter almost immediately and there goes your suction. You open the vac to clean it and then you spread those little particles right into your lungs as you beat them out of the filter. Although the bag on the side isn't wonderful it may be adequate. You should use a dust particle mask when you use a sander of course. I didn't ask if this is a orbital or belt style, the belt styles actually do dump a lot of dust into the dust bag and none of them are perfect. I have a fairly large drum sander with a 4 inch port connected to a reasonable sized dust extraction system and it doesn't get all the dust, admittedly you get a lot off of a wide work piece. There is a lot of air blowing around a sander which scatters dust quite a bit before the dust collection can grab it. Really sophisticated shops have down-draft extraction tables for that sort of work but few of us will have that sort of equipment if for no other reason, the amount of room they require. I had a 2 inch duct system here powered by a vacuum cleaner, a big honking machine which never ran more than 20 minutes before the filter filled and plugged. Not too bad on a router where the particles are a little bigger but a sander, just doesn't cut it. Finally, working a sander with a vacuum hose attached isn't all that easy or convenient. Actually few tools are easy to use with that additional drag. There are a few situations where the difficulty is worth it, I once watched a company instal television cable in a hospital, he used a circular saw with a quarter inch or wider blade and a vacuum attachment to cut grooves in the drywall into which the cable was inserted then plastered over. The vacuum kept a lot of very nasty dust from circulating through the hospital and saved probably thousands of dollars of clean-up. In my shop I run an overhead dust air cleaner and a dust collector for the bigger machines an the remains of the 2 inch ducts also running off of the big dust collector for more general clean-up, my shop though is far from pristine and probably my standards are not up to yours. When ever possible I take the really dirty sanding or circular saw cutting jobs outside. This works all right for ripping down sheet goods even in very cold weather, it isn't so good for sanding in the winter though, that usually takes a lot more time and isn't satisfactorily done using gloves or mitts.
