Clifford, I have noticed sometimes with Jaws 7 and Outlook Express that it is necessary to maximize the window to see the text with Jaws, the shortcut being ALT+Space then X. Suddenly there it is!
This does not happen with Outlook which I use at work. Hope this helps.
