I think there is a took called a "hot knife" as it was recommended to me
over and over before I hopped the hurdle and got to a level in something
else where I didn't need it.

Squeezing the recently cut line through something like a roll of cardboard
might save the fingers some.
But what I think would really do the job is that stuff that they sell for
wiping solder tips.
I can't find it anymore, but it is a non burn cloth. It smokes and tinks
and gets singed, but even a 900d tip wont burn it on a quick wipe.
Rolling the hot synthetic through that, will save the fingers and be
flexible with some working that the synthetic can be rolled.
Cutting a bit of teflon insulation and rolling the hot rope through that
will do as much. Teflon won't shrink till about 550f and won't singe till
about 940 o so.
