Sliding miter saws have a bigger capacity than non-sliding ones. There is of course some cross-over, you can buy non-sliding saws with a 14 inch blade these days which approach the capacity of a 10 inch sliding saw and there may be bigger ones I don't know about.
Most non-sliding saws have a capacity of about 8 inches at 90 degrees and less as you approach 45, something like 5 inches I think. As far as I know, all sliding saws will cut 12 inches at 90 degrees and a little better than 8 at 45. There is a big price difference though. Non-sliding saws have come down a lot, I see some here at Canadian Tire on sale at only a little over a hundred and fifty bucks. For framing a shop or garden shed as a one-off project these are a darn good deal, you won't likely be cutting anything more than 2 by four mostly anyway and so much quicker and more accurate than with a hand circular saw. A quality sliding compound miter saw will still cost around 800 bucks in Canada, some a little less and probably a few a little more. My Makita is about 1991 vintage and has done a lot of work for me, still working like new. It cost me just on 800 dollars when I bought it. Mine only tilts left for bevels and of course doesn't have a laser line guide and the back fence isn't quite as high as the newer models of that price do . I would remind you though, tools, maybe more than other consumer products are well worth spending good money on. Not only will they serve you much better but that quality helps keep you from becoming dissatisfied. An inferior tool will be replaced if you use it any amount which wastes the original purchase money and if the tool is dissatisfactory you won't like or choose to use it which wastes the money anyway. Hope this helps.
