sounds like either a whirlpool product or 1 of its sister companies
the problem is there is a couple of ears in the unit that pivot on the back
and forth motion
the cam ears catch on a grooved type gear on the upper part of the agitator
sounds like they are worn out not a uncommon problem
not sure if this is easily fixed with out eyes
I had done this repair many years ago and at that time I had site
the problem is not allot of room for hands to get in the unit to feel what
you are doing most likely about a 35.00 fix if you take the agitator to a
shop and not have them do a house call
if it is a ge product then it is a problem need to press a white metal type
of gear in the top of the agitator and there is a couple of special tools to
press the gear out and a different tool to press the gear in good luck
