Robert, Depending on how close the rear cross-member is to the pan you will want to start at either the rear or the front. What you don't want to have happen is the fluid to come out, splash against the cross member and go all over hell. Once you have determined the best end to drain from, totally remove the bolts across that end. Now remove the first four or five bolts on either side and begin loosening the rest of them. Use a mallet, brass hammer or hammer and block of wood to jar the pan loose please-please-please don pry on the gasket surface between the pan and trans housing as you will build yourself a leek.
Have the output shaft cover in your hand when you remove the drive shaft as it will piss trans fluid as soon as you remove it. One more thing when you disconnect the rear universal joint wrap it with tape so it doesn't fall apart on you. Regards Larry Stansifer Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. I have a big round drain pan that will work. So do I just unbolt the back bolts and the bolts on one side and let it drain? And when do I put on this plastic cover for the tail shaft? Do I need to put it on as soon as the drive shaft is out of the way or put it on after the engine is hoisted completely out. This is my first extraction So pardon the ignorance. I actually am looking forward to the rest of the project All I have done so far is stripped parts. Now I am going to be going into uncharted water. Reach down behind the heads and firewall and make sure there is no pesky little ground or sensor wires that will mess up your afternoon. When removing the trans mount, support the trans with a jack and block of wood under the transmission oil-pan. This might save you a pinched finger or a notted forehead. When lifting the assembly out chain the engine in such a way that the trans comes out slightly lower than center. This will save you catching it on shit on the way out. Finally please-please-please make certain all of the oil is drained from both components and ask your friendly neighborhood parts house for a plastic output shaft cover. This little animal slips over the output shaft and will prevent the trans from puking oil out of the rear seal. This last suggestion is guaranteed to gain points with the old lady. Keep us posted. Well I have decided to pull the engine. I don't Think I will ever need it for the s10 and I am not sure what I am going to do with it when I pull it. As some of you well know the 4.3 engines are very abundant at least up here. So the reason I am pulling it is I have never pulled an engine before and I want to have the satisfaction of having done it all myself. All that is left to do is to take off the lines to the power stearing and the fuel lines and unbolt the motor mounts and the exaust system.and finally to disconnect the drive shaft. I am going to pull the tranny out with the engine. I see no reason to pull the tranny before I pull the engine. I have removed every thing up front So I can pull it straight out.I have the radiator and the airconditioneing condenser and the radiator support out of the way and While I was at it I went ahead and removed the entire wiring harness. And No I did not cheet and cut the wires. I removed it completely in tact. I gave it to my mechanic. He said he can always use some of the connecters. I only work on it for a half hour here and an hour there so I hope to have it out some time in July. The only help I will have is a friend will help me with the actual job of hoisting it out. I have never used a Cherry picker before and it belongs to him so I will let him help me with that. So when I am done I can say that I basically pulled an engine myself. If I get stuck I will let you all know so you can help me out. Thursday we recorded our two hundredth blind handyman show with little fan fair or pretension. We had several scenarios for making it a special occasion but our friend Tom Houston could not attend so we just did the show. Dale Campbell helped out and our guest was our own Dan Rossi. Dan told the story of moving the four hundred pound radiator down the basement stairs with out injury to anyone or their house. This week on blind like me the guest included another list member. Her name is Patty and She lives up in Illinois, but Her biggest clame to fame is being Jeremy's Mother. Also a girl from Leavenworth Kansas, Kelly Stanfield made a full hour of interviews. Those of you who are long time listeners no, we take a month off from doing new shows each summer. This year because of some medical problems and just because we want to, we are taking seven weeks off. Our tentative return date is the last weekend in July but that is subject to change.
