Ok victor here goes...

Because Honda uses a transverse mounted drive package. This
means that the engine and trans mount cross-wise between
what serves as frame rails. Their should also be a torque
rod running from the front of the engine *the driver side*
to a hard point on the fire wall. This rod has steel ends
with rubber bushings that icilate it from both the motor and
the fire-wall. If these bushings are worn you will get a
vibration. The second test isn't something I recommend for
the amiture because it involves firmly chocking the front
wheels, setting the parking brake, starting the motor,
putting it in drive, slowly and carefully bring up the RPM'S
and see if the motor twists bward either the fire-wall or
the radiator. If the motor moves more than a few degrees you
are probably ready for motor mounts.

If the mounts are really shot you should get a slight thump
every time she shifts from park into any of the other
ranges.
I realize this kind of sounds like double talk but we've got
to start somewhere.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Engine Question

Hi Car buffs on the list, my wife drives a 1986 Honda Accord
LX, and when
she stops at a stop light or in traffic, the car shakes on
and off.

I would say that it was about to stall, but it never does.

It just starts to shutter periodically, almost rhythmically.

I took it to a mechanic, and he says that the engine mounts
have become
loose with time.

He also advises that it's nothing to worry about.

Is there a way to tighten those engine mounts so it doesn't
shutter when we
stop in traffic? Since he says it's nothing to worry about,
I trust him on
this, but I would like to get it fixed for my own peace of
mind.

The car does not do this when it is in idle, only when it's
in drive and
reverse.

The car is an automatic four cylinder.

Any suggestions?

Any help would be appreciated.
