Hi,

That will be fine. First though scrape away any flaking or blistering finish
and go over the entire surface with a little sand paper, 80 to 120 grit to put
a little tooth on the surface so the new finish will stick better. This will
also improve the surface so you will have a better texture.

If the present finish is really rough you may wish to scrape and sand a little
more because faults in the surface will show through the new finish.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] protecting an outdoor wood door

ray sent a message about painting outdoor items. We have two fir doors that
have taken a beating from the weather the past couple of years and need
  refinishing.

Is it okay to put oil based verithane over the old coating of protection even
if
  it isn't oil based verithane?

I'm not sure what was on there and I don't want to make the doors any less
protected by putting something on the doors that is going to rebel against
what
  is already on the door.

  Thanks for your thoughts,
  David
