Hi,

While I like the idea of benches, the possibility of a child crawling up onto
one and tumbling over the back which is the rail always put me off.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Dan's deck railing

  Dear Dan:
My deck is octagon shaped , or rather like one half of an octagon, with five
sides away from the house side, and they are all made up of benches which have
a nice tilt to both seat and back, but the rail around the top is level and
made of a 2 by 6. With all those angles, it was a bear to join them at the
corners, and my brother, who built it for me, made me swear to never tell
another soul who built it, as he feared someone else would request a similar
project of him.
The deck itself is cantilevered out past a 6 by 6 beam supported by 6 by 6
posts.
I would never attempt to construct such a project on my own, but given your
abilities in the construction arena, I thought I would tell you about the
benches. They are handy when company arrives.

  Yours Truly,

  Clifford Wilson
