Have you thought of planting some modest sized deciduous trees like maybe apple 
trees which don't grow too high but which would help shade in the summer and 
permit sun heat in the winter?

Adding an awning over the window if it receives direct sunshine also helps and 
maybe over the door too.

  walls. My little buildings are likely to have a higher heat load because 
  there is no surrounding house. All 4 sides are outside walls.
