If you build a ground level deck you will want pressure treated lumber on the
ground for sure. I mention it in case you are one of those who objects.
anything else won't last at all long.

Concrete though isn't all that difficult and down right easy if a Ready Mix
truck can get close. Lockstone too goes down fairly easy once you excavate and
get your bed of sand down. Lasts for ever too.

North facing door shouldn't be too bad but not so good in the winter. Evergreen
trees can form a good wind screen for the winter and may be a good choice north
of your buildings just enough to form a good wind break. You may not want their
shade in other directions in the winter so deciduous trees are usually
preferred.

You should have sufficient insulation, do you have good attic space
ventilation? That will both help cool but also improve the life of your
shingles.Screened soffit to keep insects out and if necessary screened vents in
gable ends if that is the sort of roof you have. The vents will need sloping
louver like slats to keep rain out though.

I hadn't thought of trees. My shop has no windows for security. The big
door faces north, something I'll likely regret in the winter but winters
are already mild in Kentucky and as the globe warms up are going to get
milder. The teddybear cottage does have a rather large window facing north
west and an awning may be a good idea. Actually, we want to build a patio
between the two buildings. We are thinking in terms of a ground level deck.
Much easier than a pored slab. Comments?

  Regards.
